Job Summary:

The Position of accession clerk is to receive, sort and provide accurate data entry for all specimens entering the laboratory. They will assist the histology lab in sending out cases and filing slides. The accession clerk will accurately transpose accession numbers generated for each specimen to cassettes and slides. The accession clerk will follow the direction of the supervisor while taking initiative in performing and promoting quality and efficiency within the department. The accession clerk will be trained in the expected task in order to meet the competency set by the department and all other duties as assigned by Supervisor/Manager

Job Requirements:

  • Receive, log, sort and assign accession number and maintain identifying number
  • Specimen entry, labeling specimens, numbering slides and cassettes
  • Files and retrieve blocks, slides and requisitions in accordance with guidelines
  • Maintain safe work environment
  • Responsible for following established safety guidelines
  • Promotes supportive departmental communication with customers and employees
  • Knowledge of Registration Accessioning
  • Knowledge of acceptance and rejection of specimen
  • Knowledge of specimen sorting
  • Maintaining department inventory of supplies and equipment


  • High school diploma or GED
  • Previous data entry experience
  • Medical background preferred
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease processes, and laboratory values a plus
